New IHS Markit Reports Reveal Impressive Mobile Data Speeds Across Silicon Valley

Silicon Valley is globally recognized as a technology innovation hub.
New findings from RootMetrics
by IHS Markit, the standard for mobile performance benchmarking, show
that AT&T and Verizon continue their reign over the fast-paced,
entrepreneurial region, sharing the Overall Performance RootScore Awards
in both San
Francisco
and San
Jose
.

However, speed gains across the board in San Jose are helping change the
landscape. In fact, with all four carriers recording median download
speeds above 30.0 Mbps, San Jose outpaced San Francisco in this round of
testing.

Data Performance in Silicon Valley

When it comes to data performance, AT&T and Verizon dominate in Silicon
Valley. The trend starts in San Francisco, where the carriers have
shared the Network Reliability and Data Performance RootScore Awards for
two reports in a row. In this testing cycle, AT&T and Verizon once again
outpaced the other carriers to record the fastest median download speeds
in San Francisco at 32.9 Mbps and 32.8 Mbps, respectively. AT&T also
showcased major speed gains in San Jose, increasing its median download
speed from 26.7 Mbps to 35.0 Mbps and its median upload speed from 8.0
Mbps to 11.3 Mbps.

While AT&T and Verizon continued their strong Silicon Valley
performance, T-Mobile and Sprint also exhibited noteworthy data speed
improvements. T-Mobile offered the fastest median upload speeds in both
San Francisco and San Jose, recording 13.8 Mbps and 18.8 Mbps,
respectively. T-Mobile also won the Data Performance RootScore Award
outright in San Jose, where it previously shared the award with Verizon.
And Sprint set the pace with the fastest median download speed in San
Jose at 37.4 Mbps, while also nearly doubling its median download speed
from 16.6 Mbps to 30.0 Mbps in San Francisco.

“Our recent mobile performance benchmarking tests in Silicon Valley show
that all four carriers are working to deliver the speeds end users in
the region demand,” said Francis Sideco, vice president, technology at
IHS Markit. “While the carriers continue to provide first-rate mobile
experiences in San Francisco, impressive data speed increases from all
carriers in San Jose suggest that business and residential users are
likely to find strong mobile performance across Silicon Valley.”

Comprehensive Testing

To evaluate the mobile experience in each city, IHS Markit conducted
tests across all hours of the day and night using smartphones purchased
off the shelf at carrier stores. Testing metrics for each city include
the following:

  • Tests in San Francisco were conducted from April 14 through 26 at 72
indoor locations and while driving 1,236 miles.
  • Tests in San Jose were conducted from January 24 through 29 at 40
indoor locations and while driving 857 miles.
