A new report from Navigant Research provides an overview of notable non-wires alternatives (NWA) projects in the US and explores market trends through 2028.

The proliferation of distributed energy resources (DER) technologies is providing grid operators with new mechanisms to address capacity constraints and replace strained grid infrastructure. These NWAs use DER to provide grid relief sufficient to defer more traditional upgrades like new poles or wires. Click to tweet: According to a new report from @NavigantRSRCH, revenue from NWAs in the US is expected to experience a 20% compound annual growth rate, reaching $333 million by 2028.

“Several states are moving toward mandated NWA exploration, and legislative and regulatory drivers to NWA will likely spark state-level pockets of NWA activity,” says Jesse Mehrhoff, research analyst with Navigant Research. “The development of more, cheaper DER technologies will also help to grow the NWA market.”

Navigant Research finds most utilities undertaking NWA in the US are investor-owned, but the report also tracks efforts by municipal utilities and electric cooperatives. Projects included cover non-traditional approaches to address capacity constraints or aging infrastructure on both the transmission and distribution sides of the grid. Technologies incorporated are made up of demand response, energy efficiency, distributed generation, energy storage, and software and controls. Most known projects in the US in 2019 exist in the planning or request for proposal stages, though projects in several states have been successfully implemented. Navigant Research is tracking the NWA projects to identify trends as the North American market grows.

The report, Non-Wires Alternatives Tracker, aims to provide the most comprehensive and up-to-date database of projects in the US. Information provided for projects tracked includes project name, utility, size, cost, included technologies, status, and more details where available. An Executive Summary of the report is available for free download on the Navigant Research website.
