Mark Farrah Associates Reported Improved Health Insurance Segment Profitability

Mark Farrah Associates (MFA), www.markfarrah.com, examined trends in membership, claims incurred PMPM (per member per month), adjusted premium PMPM, and MLR (Medical Loss Ratio) for the Individual and Small Group comprehensive segment leaders. Based on an analysis of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners’ (NAIC) Supplemental Health Care Exhibit (SHCE), MFA reported improvements in profitability for 2018.

  • Profitability in the Individual segment jumped in 2018, reporting an aggregate underwriting gain of over $7.9 billion, with approximately 73% of plans reporting underwriting gains in 2018.
  • Small Group segment profitability grew 22.5% between 2017 and 2018, even with a 3.0% decline in enrollment.
  • Declines in individual and group health insurance enrollment continued in 2018.
