K2View, a leading provider of real-time DataOps and data management solutions, today announced that it has been issued a patent by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for the concept of “a hierarchical structure of encryption keys for information stored in a database.” This patent represents a new, innovative approach to encryption that provides a more secure method for encrypting data. It is also foundational to how K2View solutions deliver secure and encrypted data management.

K2View solutions enable organizations to embrace a DataOps methodology – a set of people, processes and technology focused on delivering the right data, to the right place, at the right time. This is made possible with our patented Digital Entity – a person, place, or thing, that has been recreated digitally out of its data. This Digital Entity can then deliver data about that business entity in real time, for virtually any use case.

In order for a DataOps methodology to be successful, it must be implemented with security by design, and this new patent further validates how K2View is innovating with regards to encryption and data security. The new patent is for K2View’s method for hierarchically encrypting data at the deployment level, then again at the digital entity category level (read: customers, orders, products), and encrypted again at the individual entity level (Jane Doe, John Smith, etc.) – all in one implementation. Each level is uniquely encrypted, as is every individual datastore.

“By rethinking how you approach data management, and putting the data first, you can innovate in ways that you never thought possible. This patent is a tangible example,” said Achi Rotem, CTO and co-founder, K2View. “When combined with our previously patented Digital Entity, it’s now possible to encrypt every micro-database individually. So, if you’re a financial services company and have millions or billions of credit cards, a hacker would now need to hack each individually encrypted database to achieve a mass breach. Similarly, if you’re a consumer company with millions of customers, like a telco or a retailer, a hacker now needs to hack millions of individually encrypted databases – one per customer – for a mass breach to occur. This unmatched level of security is only possible by storing and managing data via the Digital Entity.”

U.S. Patent No. 10,657,275, “Encryption Directed Database Management System and Method,” was awarded to K2View on May 19, 2020, and is K2View’s second patent.
