Itron, Inc. (NASDAQ: ITRI), which is innovating the way utilities and cities manage energy and water, announced that its IntelliSOURCE-DERMS solution has received OpenADR certification from the OpenADR Alliance, which fosters the development, adoption and compliance of the OpenADR Smart Grid standard. By integrating open standards into Itron’s IntelliSOURCE-DERMS solution, Itron is helping utilities and cities to leverage more types of distributed energy resources (DER) and devices to assist with grid stabilization and reliability, pipeline management and conservation efforts.

With Itron’s OpenADR-certified DERMS solution, utilities will be able to manage solar power, energy storage and electric vehicles in addition to managing grid-connected flexible loads such as water heaters, pool pumps, thermostats and HVACs – all via open standards. This will help reduce the risk of stranded assets and costs for the utility while driving adoption of grid-connected smart energy products and more cost-effective programs.

OpenADR-based solutions allow utilities to reap the benefits of Demand Response (DR) adoption and battery storage integration, while meeting standards that automate and simplify the use of DR programs worldwide, improving reliability and operational efficiency. Further OpenADR encourages more customers to participate in a broader array of Distributed Energy Management programs since customers are not locked into any particular vendor’s proprietary communication devices or standards.

“As a member of the OpenADR Alliance, we are proud to join more than 60 utilities and controls vendors enabling OpenADR-based systems,” said Don Reeves, senior vice president of Outcomes at Itron. “We are committed to creating open standards solutions for Distributed Energy Management to encourage technological innovation and widespread customer participation in these programs.”

“Connecting smart energy to the grid, OpenADR offers an open, highly-secure and two-way information exchange model and global Smart Grid Standard,” Rolf Bienert, managing and technical director, OpenADR Alliance. “By complying with the OpenADR Smart Grid Standard, Itron’s IntelliSOURCE platform will enable utilities to make DR a more reliable, cost-effective resource to meet the growing demand for energy, while giving customers greater control over their energy future and freeing customers to easily add or subtract pieces of equipment that can participate in the programs such as new thermostats, batteries and other program eligible equipment.”
