Flatiron Health today announced that Nina Chavez, formerly chief operating officer at New Mexico Oncology Hematology Consultants (NMOHC) at the New Mexico Cancer Center (NMCC), has joined Flatiron as a senior advisor. In this role, Nina will serve as a subject matter expert in value-based care and clinical practice transformation. She will be responsible for creating and implementing solutions to help practices succeed in the dynamic oncology marketplace.

Prior to joining Flatiron, Nina provided leadership and change management to NMCC to promote quality, innovation and clinical excellence. Reporting to the CEO, she helped shape the practice’s strategic direction, to build a top-performing team of 150+ staff and 22+ physicians and APPs. With her team, Nina participated in the expansion of NMCC’s capabilities beyond medical and radiation oncology, creating a multispecialty center offering rheumatology, primary care, palliative care, clinical research and internal medicine to help attract the right patient and payer mix.

“As the complexity of our community oncology landscape, competitive dynamics, and regulatory environment intensifies, it is increasingly important that Flatiron supports practices to drive financial and operational success beyond our core technology and service offerings,” said Carolyn Starrett, SVP of Provider Solutions. “Nina will offer Flatiron’s practices support in the community oncology space by leveraging her 16 years of experience in achieving cancer center business operational excellence.”

Nina participated in the leadership of the effort to transform NMCC into a level III oncology medical home with the National Committee for Quality Assurance, triggering participation in the Oncology Care Model with CMS and increasing Medicare reimbursement in quality adjustments and performance-based payments. She is considered a leading expert in USP800 and dispensing clinic operations, speaking at several national conferences over the years.

Nina previously served on the boards of the Association of Community Cancer Centers, and the Coalition of Hematology and Oncology Practices. Additionally, she is a fellow with the American College of Medical Practice Executives.

“After years of partnership and collaboration, I am excited to be joining Flatiron Health, a company that is dedicated to supporting community oncology,” said Nina Chavez. “I am looking forward to the opportunities that lay ahead to support practice leadership in their efforts to navigate community oncology in the ever-changing healthcare environment.”
