Samsung Galaxy S7 Will Debut On February 21 At MWC 2016

Samsung has sent out official media invites to its Galaxy Unpacked event, set to be held on February 21 at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, where it will unveil at least one new smartphone, almost certainly rhe the Galaxy S7, and possibly more.

The company’s events at MWC in the past few years have been the scene of numerous flagship handset launches, including the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge last year.

The invite itself is accompanied by a short 15-second video, which shows a man wearing one of Samsung’s Gear VR virtual reality headsets, suggesting virtual reality or the devices will also play a part in the Galaxy Unpacked event.

This could be the launch of a new or upgraded edition of Gear VR, or a hint that the new Galaxy smartphone will come with virtual reality functions included.

What seems clear is that the video, which ends with the hashtag ‘#TheNextGalaxy’, appears to confirm the name of the new device, with a luminescent seven appearing as the closing image. TechWeekEurope will be attending Samsung Unpacked at MWC on February 21.

Samsung will be hoping that the new Galaxy S7 will help it rediscover its fortunes after its latest financial results showed that the company suffered a large drop in profits in 2015.

The company saw its net profit slid almost 40 percent year-on-year to 3.22 trillion won (£1.8bn) as demand for smartphones fell across the world, especially among the increasingly crowded Android market.

This was in spite of the company’s mobile division actually recording slim profits for the second consecutive quarter, and being recognised by industry observers as the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer.
