Microsoft’s Next Windows Phone Flagship Revealed

Further details have emerged about the next generation of Microsoft’s flagship Windows Phone devices, including the reported first images.

Photos of the rumoured Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL have appeared on Chinese website WPXAP, claiming to show a prototype of the latter in a protective black case, with the images confirmed as being genuine by The Verge.

Microsoft is reportedly planning to launch both devices later this year, possibly alongside the reveal of Windows 10 Mobile.

Progress

The company first revealed it was developing new devices for Windows 10 back at Mobile World Congress, having released a technical preview of the software for the first time the previous month.

Since then, Microsoft has released several updated versions of Windows 10 Mobile ahead of an expected launch next month, showing off popular apps such as Cortana and Xbox Live along with the company’s all-new Edge browser.

As for the devices themselves, reports last month claimed that both the Lumia 950 and 950 XL will come with support for facial scanning, as an iris scanner will allow users to unlock their device without needing to enter a password, as well as styluses and USB-C connectivity for accompanying charging stations.

The Lumia 950 XL is the more powerful of the pair, sporting a 5.7 inch WQHD OLED display, 64-bit octa-core Snapdragon 810 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage and a 3,300mAh battery. There’s also a 20MP PureView rear camera with triple LED flash, a 5MP front device, wireless charging and the aforementioned iris scanner.

Its little brother will come with a 5.2 inch WQHD OLED display, a hexa-core 64-bit Snapdragon 808 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, and a 3,000mAh battery, along with the same 20MP and 5MP rear and front cameras.
