iOS 9 Already Powers 19 Percent Of All iPhones And iPads

iOS 9 is now present on 19 percent of all iPhone and iPad devices, less than 48 hours after it was made available as a free upgrade and despite reports of some users having difficulty with downloading the update.

The software was made available as a public beta prior to its commercial launch and on the eve of its release, figures from MixPanel show one percent of all iDevices were running iOS 9.

iOS 9 update

This increased to 12 percent after 24 hours before rising to the current figure at 11:00am today. iOS 8 is still powering 71 percent of all iOS devices, with 10 percent running something older.

TechWeekEurope readers have been more active than the general public in downloading their smartphones and tablets as 24 percent are now using iOS 9, compared to 57 percent running variants of iOS 8.

However many users have complained about being unable to download iOS 9, citing “Software Update Failed” errors, presumably caused by such high demand. Others have complained their devices “crashed” when attempting to update, leaving them with the choice of waiting for Apple to release a fix or returning their phone or tablet to factory settings.

The latest version of Apple’s mobile operating system introduces a range of new features and usability enhancements but also boosts the platform’s security. Indeed, some researchers are saying the only way to protect an iPhone or iPad against a flaw in the Bluetooth-powered AirDrop feature is to upgrade to iOS 9.
