Shell And PayPal Team Up For Speedy Smartphone Petrol Payments

PayPal is taking another step into the physical world with a new partnership with petrol giant Shell that will allow drivers to pay for fuel at the pump.

The online payments provider is powering a new Fill Up & Go app, available for Android and iOS, that lets customers pay by scanning a QR code with their smartphone.at hundreds of Shell petrol stations across the UK from today.

Pump and go

To use the service, customers simply need to link their PayPal account to the app, set up a PIN and head to a Shell station.

Once there, customers open the app and choose how much they want to spend, before scanning a giant QR code next to the pump which will activate it for use.

Users can spend from £20 to £150, which should easily be enough for most cars in the UK today, with the pump automatically stopping the fuel from coming out before you reach your maximum fuel spend limit.

The app will then confirm the purchase and email the user a receipt.

Shell and PayPal first announced that they would be working together for easier payments back in February, when a similar service that used PayPal’s own app was launched.

PayPal, which is currently in the process of being spun off by parent company eBay, says its app is already accepted in more than 8,000 UK shops and restaurants, and is used through some 19 million active British accounts.
