China Cracks Down On 50 ‘Violating’ Websites

The Chinese government has shut down 50 websites which have violated the country’s Internet regulations.

The websites, which include 17 public pages on the mobile messenging app Weixin, 24 other websites and 9 columns on websites, were closed by the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC), which said that the websites were closed because of violations such as pornography to ‘publishing political news without a permit’.

Content-Delivery Network

In November, the Chinese government reportedly blocked the operations of a prominent Internet content-delivery network (CDN) in China ahead of the country’s first World Internet Conference.

Since then, the state-run news agency Xinhua has said that almost 1.8 million accounts on social networking sites have been shut down for violating pornography rules.

The CAC was formerly known as the State Internet Information Office, and is tasked with the mission of promoting the “development of [the] Internet to be the global shared resources for human solidarity and economic progress.”
