Argos has announced it will be launching a same-day delivery service across the UK as the high street retailer looks to compete with online giants during the lucrative Christmas shopping season.
Same-day delivery is available immediately for 20,000 products, seven days a week, 364 days a year – the first time such a service is available nationwide.
Argos says the launch will create around 3,300 jobs for delivery drivers as it spreads its delivery network further across the UK, up to 1,000 of which are currently being recruited solely for the lead up to Christmas.
The move marks the famous catalogue shop’s latest attempt to reinvent itself amid fierce competition from the web.
Amazon has long been a trailblazer in this space, particularly due to its Prime Now service, which offers one-hour delivery on selected products. Prime Now was recently rolled out to more customers in and around London as the company looks to widen its reach.
The company also recently announced its AmazonFresh service, which offers a choice of around 50 chilled grocery products and is set for a UK-wide launch later this year.
