Amazon’s quest to stretch across all areas of retail continues to pick up steam with the news that the company is set to launch its own clothing line.
The online shopping giant is planning to unveil the line later this year, according to WWD, which noted that the company has been recruiting for positions needed to support a fashion launch.
This includes a job posting for a senior sourcing manager posted online last week, which looks to find, “an entrepreneurial, analytical and highly motivated [senior] sourcing manager to join our team to launch new high-quality products for our global customers.”
The posting adds that the role includes selecting and negotiating with factories and managing manufacturers, with a separate other job posting posted recently looks to find someone to handle inventory and relationships with vendors.
The company has rapidly been expanding its business operations in recent months, as it looks to spread its influence in a variety of industries.
One that may be extremely helpful for the clothing industry was the registering of Amazon’s Chinese subsidiary as an ‘ocean freight forwarder’ last month, meaning it can organise the shipment of goods from a supplier or factory in one region to an overseas company or customer.
This means that Amazon will effectively be able to cut out the middleman when shipping large volumes of items between overseas markets, saving the company money but also making delivery and shipping much more efficient.
Amazon has also been heavily promoting drone delivery technology, which it says is currently undergoing testing ahead of a public launch within the next few years.
Amazon has also been ramping up its services and delivery options in the UK in recent months, having launched a food delivery service, Amazon Pantry, back in November.
The company is also reportedly planning to launch a new service that will employ normal people to courier goods. The “On My Way” program would offer ordinary people payment to drop off packages on their way home from work or school, with users able to sign up via a dedicated mobile app.
