Google Cardboard Goes On Sale In The UK For Just £15

Google has launched its Google Cardboard virtual reality device in the UK for just £15, or £25 for two, available to buy from its online store. Google is even throwing in free delivery on all orders.

First released back in 2014, but until now not available publicly in the UK, Google Cardboard is a low-cost accessory that lets user insert their mobile device into a cardboard headset to enjoy thousands of VR experiences.

Flexible

Google says that Cardboard supports most Android or iOS phones with screen sizes from four to six inches, with an interactive click button that will allow it to work with nearly all devices. Users will need to Android 4.1 or higher or iOS 8.0 or higher to get the most out of the apps.

The company is betting big on VR and has created a standalone business.

Google has also launched several specialised apps for Cardboard in recent months, including a Cardboard Camera app for making 3D panoramas with your Android phone, as well as making every YouTube video compatible with the product.

Recent estimates from Deloitte predict that 2016 will be the first ‘billion dollar year’ for virtual reality, with $700 million spent on hardware such as Oculus Rift, and $300 million splashed out on software.

Several major companies are already enjoying the increase in public attention given to VR technology, with HTC selling 15,000 of its Vive headsets (priced at £689 each) in just ten minutes when UK pre-orders opened in March.

  • The item is too expensive, from its appearance: cardboard, velcro, rubber band, foam pad and two plastic lenses.

    • Certainly expensive - I can remember getting one free with a comic when I was a lad (and we didn't have smartphones and computers)...
