More details about the Apple Watch could be revealed next month after invites are sent out for San Francisco event

Apple is to hold an event on 9 March in California where it is expected to reveal plans for its long-awaited entry into the smartwatch market.

An invitation to the Yerba Buena Centre for the Arts Theatre in San Francisco has been sent out to the media, cryptically stating “spring forward”, in what is widely considered to be a play on the resetting of watches for daylight saving time.

Apple Watch (2)Coming soon?

The Apple Watch was first revealed last September alongside the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus with CEO Tim Cook confirming the device is slated for an April release.

The timing of the San Francisco event would allow Apple to meet that deadline as it traditionally launches new products shortly after their official unveil.

After years of rumour and speculation, Apple’s first smartwatch effort has been eagerly anticipated by the technology industry as it is expected the Apple Watch will kickstart an embryonic market populated by the likes of Samsung, Motorola and Pebble.

It will also start Apple’s first major new product line since the launch of the iPad in 2010 and the first since former CEO Steve Jobs’ death in 2011.

The Apple Watch runs a version of iOS designed specifically for smaller screens  and has a strong emphasis on health and fitness apps, communication and will be compatible with the Apple Pay mobile wallet. Users will need an iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 5S or 5C to take advantage of many of the features of the Apple Watch however.
