Equinix Snaps Up Japanese Data Centre Provider Bit-Isle

Equinix is beefing up its data centre footprint once again by scooping up Japanese data centre provider Bit-isle for $280 million (£182m).

The purchase will undoubtedly strengthen Equinix’s Asia Pacific presence, with Bit-isle operating almost 4,000 racks as of June this year.

Fourth-largest

After the acquisition, Equinix will have become the fourth largest data centre provider in Japan, hosting five data centers in Tokyo and one in Osaka.

“We will continue to support Japanese companies in Japan, and in every market where they do business,” said Kohei Terada, CEO of Bit-isle.

Steve Smith, Equinix’s president, explained how Equinix is looking to attract the attention of Japanese businesses.

“Both Equinix and Bit-isle have the same vision for cloud computing, and Bit-isle’s five data centers are in the best locations in Tokyo,” said Smith.

The acquired data centres will be tethered to existing Equinix IBX data centres for campus connectivity to network and cloud service providers, business ecosystems and other enterprises within a metropolitan area.

In July, Equinix reported a 10 percent increase in revenues from the same quarter last year, helped by strong growth in snapping up cloud customers.

Revenues were $665.6 million (£426m)  for the second quarter, up 3 percent from Q1. Recurring revenues, which are made up of Equinix’s colocation, interconnection and managed services businesses were $626.7 million (£400m) for the second quarter, a 3 percent increase over the previous quarter and a 9 percent increase over the same quarter last year.
