LG Reveals Triple-SIM Smartphone

The Optimus L1 II Tri was unveiled on LG’s Brazilian online store

LG has revealed the company’s first triple-SIM smartphone, the Optimus L1 II Tri.

The budget device was unveiled on the company’s Brazilian webpage today under the tagline ‘Optimus is More’.  It will feature a 3.0 inch FT capacitive screen with QVGA (240 x 320 pixels) resolution and 262K colour display. It will be powered by an as-yet unspecified 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor paired with 512MB RAM.

Measuring 102.6 x 58.9 x 13.3mm and weighing just 104.6 grams, the phone will run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, and also includes a 2-megapixel rear camera with 4x zooming capability; however there is no front-facing camera. It comes with a 4GB of in-built storage, which can be expanded up to 32GB via a microSD card.

Triple threat

LG Optimus L1 II TriThe ability to use multiple SIM cards is a major draw for customers in developing countries such as Brazil, which often have high smartphone adoption rates but cannot afford expensive handsets or expensive long-term contracts. Customers in these markets therefore prefer to utilise several low-cost pay as you go contracts which can be easily and quickly switched between shared devices.

“With the LG Optimus II Tri L1 you can speak with your personal and professional contacts in the same handset,” the posting says, referencing another use for the technology – the ability to store separate personal and work contacts and data separately on the same device using more than one SIM card.

The Optimus II Tri L1 will also include Bluetooth 3.0,Wi-Fi, 3G, WAP, EDGE and GPRS, and is powered by a 1540mAh Li-Po battery. It also features several intriguing media applications, including recording software which lets users download music from radio stations whilst removing any interludes from DJs or advertisements. The device’s camera also has one tool which harks back to a simple age of photography, containing the ability to voice activate image capture through a certain word – LG suggests ‘Cheese!’

Given the current listing, the Optimus L1 II Tri should be released first in Brazil, and then followed by other regions. There are no details as yet regarding pricing, but the device will be available in black, pink and white colour schemes.
