£129 tablet goes on sale in Tesco stores from October 9

Supermarket giant Tesco has taken the wraps off the second generation of its own-brand tablet, the hudl2.

The low-cost device, which will cost just £129 and will available in eight colours, was revealed to media today and will go on sale in over 800 Tesco stores and online from October 9.

The hudl2 is a major upgrade from its predecessor, featuring an 8.3in full HD screen which means it should be ideal for watching videos or playing games, with a battery life capable of dealing with eight hours of video.

It’s also had a serious hardware boost, with a 1.8GHz Intel Atom quad-core processor and 2GB of RAM powering the device, which will run Android KitKat 4.4.2.

The hudl2 will also feature a 5MP rear camera (without flash), 1.2MP front-facing camera and a microSD slot if you need to expand its 16GB of internal memory.

Tesco is also offering several benefits to its existing customers, making the hudl2 available through its Clubcard Boost loyalty scheme, meaning some people will be able to purchase the tablet for just £65.

Each hudl2 will also come with a “Book of treats” including £60 worth of savings at Tesco, including £25 of free credit for the company’s blinkbox media download service, which can be spent on movies, books and music.

The company has also teamed up with The Parent Zone to develop and advanced child filter option, allowing parents to set up profiles for up to seven users determining how long kids can use the hudl2 and what they can access using it.

“We know customers want easy, accessible technology that the whole family can use whether working, shopping, gaming, learning or just taking some time out. Cutting-edge technology doesn’t have to come with a big price tag,” said Michael Comish, group digital officer at Tesco.

“hudl2 may be affordable, but we’ve cut no corners when it comes to performance – this is our best tablet offering yet.”

Tesco released the original hudl last September, with the device proving to be a surprise hit for the company, having sold over 750,000 products to date. This included 35,000 tablets being sold within the first two days of release, with the company twice selling out in the run up to Christmas.

The company even revealed it had shelved plans for a hudl smartphone in order to focus on developing the hudl2, so will be hoping for similarly high returns this time around.
