64-Bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 And 808 To Offer CAT 6 LTE And 4K Video

New Qualcomm chips are expected to be in smartphones and tablets by early 2015

Qualcomm says its new Snapdragon 810 and 808 are its highest performing mobile processors to date, promising that the two 64-bit chipsets will provide high end smartphones and tablets with the fastest LTE connectivity and best support for 4K Ultra HD video.

The two processors support 3x20MHz carrier aggregation, enabling support for CAT 6 LTE-Advanced, which is capable of speeds of up to 300Mbps.

The San Diego-based firm says the chips are the first high end 64-bit processors to enable LTE-A globally with a single design and should be available in mobile devices by early 2015.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 is the more powerful of the two new chipsets, and combines quad-core ARM Cortex-A57 and Cortex-A53 CPUs with a Qualcomm Adreno 430 GPU. It is the first mobile platform to support Qualcomm;s VIVE 2-steam 802.11ac multi-user MIMO Wi-Fi technology, while it has high speed LPDDR4 memory.

It supports 4K Ultra HD interfaces and video and is powered by the first 14-bit camera dual image signal processors for smartphones, meaning it can support sensors of up to 55 megapixels and full HDR video. The 810 also has external 4K display support via an HDMI 1.4 cable, while it is also capable of Bluetooth 4.1, USB 3.0 and Near Field Communication.

The Snapdragon 808 is less powerful, but is still targeted at the premium end of the smartphone market. It pairs two Cortex-A57 CPUs with four Cortex-A53 CPUs, while it has an Adreno 418 GPU. It has LPDDR3 memory and a weaker 12-bit dual image signal processor, but has many of the same LTE and 4K video capabilities.

“The announcement of the Snapdragon 810 and 808 processors underscore Qualcomm Technologies’ continued commitment to technology leadership and a time-to-market advantage for our customers for premium tier 64-bit LTE-enabled smartphones and tablets,” adds Renduchintala.

Qualcomm showed off the Snapdragon 801 processer at Mobile World Congress earlier this year, with the chip used to power the latest generation of Android smartphones, including Sony Xperia Z2, Samsung Galaxy S5 and HTC One (M8) among others.
