Motorola Droid Razr Hits UK Shelves

Motorola’s latest smartphone, the Droid Razr, is now available to purchase at a number of UK retailers.

The device is currently being sold at Carphone Warehouse and Phones4U on both Vodafone and Orange’s pay monthly tariffs.

The slimline phone subscribes to the aesthetics of Motorola’s Droid franchise while the 7.1mm thin body draws comparisons with the RAZR series of ultra-slim phones that Motorola released in the mid-2000s.

Android 2.3 Gingerbread is the operating system of choice, although it is expected that an upgrade to 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich will be possible.

The phone’s features includes a 4.3” super AMOLED screen, a dual core 1.2 GHz processor and a battery capable of 12 and a half hours of 3G talk time. The rear facing camera weighs in at eight megapixels while the front-facing one is capable of producing high-definition video.

Security and protection are provided in the form of a steel core and Kevlar-integrated design along with business-centric features such as remote data-wipe and robust encryption.

It is hoped that the Droid Razr will revive the fortunes of Motorola Mobility, which was formed in December 2010 when Motorola announced that it was to split its handset and business divisions into two separate companies.

Earlier this year, Motorola Mobility was forced to issue profit warnings due to product delays and lower than expected sales of Motorola Xoom, which sold just 100,000 units despite receiving positive reviews and was expected to be the first Android Honeycomb to challenge the iPad 2.

However these disappointments were not enough to dissuade Google from announcing a £7.7 billion takeover deal of the company in a move widely seen as an attempt to strengthen the Android platform and acquire key patents to assist it in its ongoing legal struggles with Apple and others.
