Microsoft Office iPhone App Available For Free To Office 365 Users

Microsoft Office app doesn’t offer native iPad support

Microsoft has finally released an official Microsoft Office Mobile application for the iPhone, but it is only available to Office 365 subscribers and is not optimised for the iPad.

Office Mobile comes preloaded on Windows Phone, but this new app marks the first time it has been made available on the rival iOS platform.

The application allows users to read and edit files in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, with formatting retained from the PC and Mac versions, unlike other office programmes which do not support the same range of features.

Microsoft Office iOS iPhone (1) Charts and Auto sum are available in Excel, while the mobile version of PowerPoint is billed as perfect for preparing presentations.

Documents can be accessed through the cloud via SkyDrive, SkyDrive Pro and email attachments, while the Resume Reading feature takes you to the exact point in the document where you left off on the computer.

The application is optimised for the small screen and can be downloaded into an iPhone 4 or later running at least iOS 6.1. However it is not a universal application and iPad users are recommended to use Office Web Apps, a surprising development given that a version for Apple’s tablet has long been rumoured.

Microsoft has a number of other iOS applications, including SkyDrive and OneNote, and hopes that this latest service will encourage consumers to take out an Office 365 subscription. It said the release was an example of its commitment to delivering regular updates to the service, such as the recent addition of Skype integration.
