LifeLock Pulls Wallet App And Deletes Data Over Security Concerns

LifeLock takes drastic action as it fears its mobile wallet isn’t compliant with payment card industry regulations

Anti-identity theft firm LifeLock has removed its Wallet application from online stores over fears its security isn’t up to scratch.

Chief executive of LifeLock, Todd Davis, said the Wallet mobile app “may not be fully compliant with payment card industry (PCI) security standards”. As a result, it’s been taken down from Apple’s App Store, Amazon Apps and Google Play, whilst all user data related to the app has been deleted.

LifeLock website imageThere was no indication the information had been compromised in any way, but LifeLock still felt drastic action was necessary. The app stored users’ financial data, from credit cards and loyalty schemes, to make payments easy whilst allowing for balance checks.

This isn’t the first time LifeLock has had issues with security. In 2010, it was fined $12 million in the US for deceptive business practices and failing to secure customer data, according to Wired.

“As a company dedicated to online security and safety, we are committed to doing everything we can to ensure those who trust us with their personal information can do so without question,” Davis said in a post on the LifeLock website.

“We believe the LifeLock Wallet provides services and functionality that users value, and we’ll be working to return a Wallet with the highest level of PCI compliance to users soon.

“I want to make sure that when LifeLock Wallet is available again, you’ll know that you can download it, provide your personal information and use it again with confidence – knowing that it’s backed by an industry leader that is committed to doing the right thing and taking care of its customers.”
