Dropbox Pro Adds Security Features, Ups Storage To 1TB

Dropbox Pro adds new sharing options and remote wipe in effort to win over ‘prosumers’

Dropbox has updated its ‘Pro’ service with new security and sharing features, with storage for all users boosted to 1TB.

Users can now add passwords and set expiration dates for shared links, while lost or stolen devices can be remote wiped of all data.

Such features have already been made available to Dropbox for Business subscribers for some time, but Dropbox Pro is aimed at consumers or individuals who require more than the standard free service on the cloud storage platform.

It offers more storage, better security and higher sharing limits, with the company’s head of product ChenLi Wang identifying potential users as university professors or musicians. Subscriptions to Dropbox Pro cost £7.99 a month or £79 a year.

The company competes with Box, Google Drive and OneDrive among others in the increasingly competitive cloud storage market, with particular attention being paid to Dropbox for Business, which currently has 80,000 users.

Dropbox currently has 300 million users in total, with the service hosting one billion shared folders and links and 1TB of files saved daily. The number of users has grown by 200 percent in the past 18 months and there are 300,000 applications built on the platform.

The company is set to open a UK office in London as part of its ongoing expansion plans, explaining that 70 percent of its users are based outside the US.
