Virgin Media Boosts Its Broadband Top Speed To 200Mbps

‘Vivid’ service provides faster connectivity with all Virgin Media customers eligible for an upgrade

Virgin Media broadband customers are set for a major speed boost after the company announced it would be upping its network to the fastest speeds yet.

The new ‘Vivid’ network will provide speeds of up to 200Mbps, meaning users can get online and download movies and music quicker than ever before.

Virgin’s 4.6 million UK customers will be able to upgrade to the new superfast networks from later this week, with an opt-in rollout scheme starting from October 1.

Customers currently on speeds of 50Mbps, 100Mbps and 152Mbps will all be eligible to upgrade their services under the new services, accessing speeds of 70Mbps, 150Mbps and 200Mbps respectively, with the latter two services now under the Vivid brand.

“Our message is simple: if you want to be certain that you are signing up to true ultrafast broadband speeds of 100Mbps and above, Vivid from Virgin Media is the new standard,” said Gregor McNeil, a managing director at Virgin Media.

“The speed of a customer’s broadband connection matters; when you have more you can do more.”

Virgin Media says that 90 percent of customers being able to upgrade by the end of 2015, thanks to its DOCSIS 3 technology, which means that the company can make the new networks available in record time.

The company says the new networks are the response to a growing consumer demand for faster network speeds, as data usage on its network is currently growing at a rate of 60 percent every year, a trend which, if it continues, will be 10,000 percent higher by 2025.

The company is also currently investing £3 billion to connect four million more homes and businesses around the country to ultrafast broadband speeds.
