Apple’s Futuristic New HQ To Open In April

The first staff will move into Apple’s new futuristic headquarters in California this April – nearly two years after the company first hoped to complete the project.

The company had hoped to settle down in the facility in 2015, but this was bumped to mid-2016 and delayed yet again.

The 175 acre campus will be known as ‘Apple Park’, the focal point of which will be the ‘doughnut’ shaped campus ring – a 2.8m square foot building clad entirely in curved glass. Inside will be two miles of walking and running paths, an orchard, meadow and pond.

The site will also be home to a visitor centre and cafe, R&D facility and a new 1,000 auditorium to be named after late CEO Steve Jobs and located at the highest point in Apple Park.

“Steve’s vision for Apple stretched far beyond his time with us. He intended Apple Park to be the home of innovation for generations to come,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “The workspaces and parklands are designed to inspire our team as well as benefit the environment. We’ve achieved the most energy-efficient building of its kind in the world and the campus will run entirely on renewable energy.”

“Steve invested so much of his energy creating and supporting vital, creative environments. We have approached the design, engineering and making of our new campus with the same enthusiasm and design principles that characterize our products,” said Jony Ive, Apple’s chief design officer.

Apple claims the site is powered entirely by renewable energy, with 17mw of rooftop solar power making it one of the largest on-site installations in the world. The company also says it is the world’s largest naturally ventilated buildings and will need no heating or air conditioning for three quarters of the year.

Despite a move in date on the horizon, it will take six months to move all 12,000 staff to the new building and construction will continue until the summer .

Apple is also building a new base in London, located at the Battersea Power Station redevelopment, where it will become the largest tenant with 500,000 square feet.
