Samsung Delays Release Of Its Next-Generation Smartwatch

Round-faced ‘Gear A’ smartwatch will now launch alongside Galaxy Note 5 later this year

Samsung has delayed the launch of its next smartwatch in the face of the mountain of hype surrounding the Apple Watch.

In order to not get completely swallowed up by press coverage concerning Apple’s device, the company has instead decided to push back the launch of the newly-designed Gear A smartwatch (codenamed Orbis) until later this year, according to sources speaking to Sammobile.

In order to ensure the company follows a ‘proper timetable’ with its releases, this unveiling will now take place alongside the Galaxy Note 5 phablet device, with the IFA technology show in Berlin in September looking a likely venue.

Samsung Gear S (6)All-round

Samsung revealed its last smartwatch, the Gear S, (pictured left) last August, but since then has focused more on the design and launch of its new flagship mobile devices, the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, revealed at Mobile World Congress in March.

A round watch face would mark the company’s first such foray into such a design, as the previous editions of the Gear have all featured square displays.

The Apple Watch officially went on sale in the UK on April 24, launching with over 3,000 compatible apps. There are three different versions (or collections) of Watch, each available in two sizes and two colours, and a variety of bracelet options. Prices start from £299 but rise to £13,000 for the most premium models.
