Reading becomes the UK’s latest Gigabit City with access to ultrafast broadband

CityFibre has launched its pure fibre, high-speed network in Reading, making the city the UK’s latest Gigabit City.

The company announced it has laid approximately 30km of its fibre network throughout Reading, giving businesses access to “affordable, ultrafast internet services”, courtesy of CityFibre’s launch partner BtL.

Reading’s pure fibre

With a pure fibre network in Reading, CityFibre boasts it has put Reading’s businesses among the best connected businesses in the country, and noted that its providing the city with a future-proof fibre infrastructure that ensures Reading can meet its smart city objectives outlined in the Reading UK 2050 project.

“Our network is designed to accommodate Reading’s current and future digital needs, from connecting public sector sites, schools and hospitals to powering the masts and small cells needed to deliver 4G and even 5G mobile coverage. Connecting businesses large and small is only the first step in Reading’s Gigabit City journey,” said Greg Mesch, CEO at CityFibre.

Working with BtL, a provider of business-to-business IT and telecoms services, CityFibre has a solid partner to with which to attract businesses across Reading to sign up to its network.

“We have been observing demand for ultrafast services grow exponentially in recent years, and this project has the potential to unlock a tide of demand for faster, more resilient and more affordable services. Businesses can now stop concerning themselves with bandwidth restrictions and instead optimise their operations, improving their experience and driving the bottom line,” said BtL’s managing director Rob Lamden.

With access to CityFibre’s network Reading joins the likes of Hull, whose businesses gained access to 1Gbps broadband services provided through Pure Broadband and CityFibre’s network.

Access to ultra-fast broadband is becoming a competitive area with the likes of Virgin Media joining forces with property company Redrow to bring its fibre network to more buildings in the UK.
