AWS Buys Cloud9 To Boost Developer Services

Amazon Web Services

Startup Cloud9 specialises in developer tools delivered through cloud

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has acquired Cloud9, a San Francisco-based startup that focuses on building cloud development environments for developers on both the web and mobile.

“We will be joining the Amazon Web Services family, and we’re looking forward to working together on terrific customer offerings for the future,” said Ruben Daniels, Cloud9 CEO.

“It’s still business as usual—we’ll continue to work with our Ace Open Source community and to provide our innovative services to you and our hundreds of thousands of customers worldwide. Over time, we’ll work with AWS to do even more on your behalf.”

Collaboration

netflixCloud9, founded in 2010, specialises in providing tools that let developers collaborate together over the cloud. “We maintain it, you control it,” is one of the company’s slogans.

Its services run on a full Ubuntu workspace, and support more than 40 programming languages. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but for Amazon, it’s another feather in the cap for attracting developers to the service.

In other AWS news, the company said last week the Britain’s decision to leave the European Union will not impact its decision to open data centres in the UK.

“In light of the Brexit vote, I just wanted to reassure our customers that we see the UK as a fast innovator, we see the UK has a huge talent pool, and as a fast adopter of technology trends, ” AWS UK manager Gavin Jackson told the 5,000-strong audience at Amazon’s AWS Summit in London last week.

“Our job at AWS is to help you innovate through technology. So, we as AWS will continue to be an inward investor into the UK, and yes, we will continue on our path to launching a UK region at the end of this year or the beginning of next year.

“Our message to everybody in this room is to keep calm and keep innovating in the UK with cloud and AWS.”
